Still Uneasy

I am still very un-comfortable riding my new Trike since I ran off the road in the gust of wind. It seems each time I have ridden it any distance at all, the wind is really blowing hard. I don't know if I am trying to over correct by over steering or if I have just lost my nerve with it. All I can think of when riding it now is the wind is going to blow me into the path of a car. I still have not told my wife that I ran off the road, or else she would never try driving it. I am very uncomforable now with her riding with me. She rode with me last week and I did not get above 55 at any time. When that happens, which is the speed limit on most secondary roads, you are passed by everything on the street and people look at you like you are crazy for just putt-putting along. Have any of you ever lost your nerve to drive and how did you regain your confidence to handle it. I'm at a loss!

I did after an accident 5 years ago. It took alittle time, but got my nerve back. Here's my advice. 1. Return to the parking lot. Practice all the maneuvers. Practice, practice, practice. 2. Remember to breath. Anxious people chest breath and thus build up CO2 in their blood stream. This inhibits clear thinking and thus makes us more anxious. 3. Consider the Trike course. 4. Consider the Tulsa windshield and bellie pan. 5. Avoid coffee.

Jimmy, that's the way I was on two wheels. I basicly stopped riding until I triked it last August. I do have the belly pan on the conversion(also had it on the two wheeler) and I really think it makes a difference. I found I had to really talk to myself and make myself relax. This past weekend I had to take a short interstate trip. I kept it at a little over 70mph, but I was going directly into a gusting headwind of about 20-30 mph. At first I had a death grip on the bars but I kept telling myself to relax, to ease up my grip, and to realize that the wind really wasn't pushing me all over. It would just give a quick "nudge" and then back to normal. Give it time. Practice. Relax.

I think that nothing we say will calm your nerves about riding in the wind but I personally have never felt uneasy while riding in very windy conditions. Being new to the Trike mabey you were leaning rather than steering (?).

Jimmy, If you can, avoid high winds for a while and gets lots of miles in. While I was learning my trike, I would play around a little bit in my lane( when there wasn't any traffic around) and get the feel for what different things did as compared to two wheels. It took a while to steer not lean, but now I feel very comfortable in what the bike will do. Don't give up!!

Jimmy, my wife and I rode that day the same road going to the same place as you did. She was on her trike and I on my 1500. Sorry you had the pro-blem, but now is the time to go out and build your confidence up. I have read your earlier post and I would hate to see you doubt yourself after all these years of riding. Also you need to discuss what happened with your riding companion.
Your wife rides with you and you need to keep abreast of what's going with you. She is your best therapy. As stated in early post get out and practice. It's early in the riding season and we all get rust over the winter. As a rule of thumb I
will do the parking lot thing early in the season just to remember how good it feels to be riding and do a self check. Give it sometime,be careful and don't beat on yourself so bad. You fell off your horse, get back up and ride it.

I do not recommend a belly pan on a trike........ I had one on my '89 when I had it converted from a two wheeler by CSC in December 1999. They rcommended NOT using it & after experiencing WEIRD things whilst riding, I took it off. The weird things no longer happened. It was really great when I had the two wheeler, but things just didn't feel right with the trike until I took it off..... My "Two Cents" worth.........

Dick,
What do you mean by weird things? I just triked my bike less than a 1000 miles ago and haven't experienced anything weird with the belly pan on.

By Ron Wilson on Wednesday, April 18, 2001 - 09:32 am:

Dick, same question. I only have about 4000 miles on my CSC conversion and haven't noticed anything unusal (except those darn RR tracks) using the belly pan. What is happening with yours?

By Jimmy Broadway on Wednesday, April 18, 2001 - 10:22 am:

Thanks for al the words of encouragement. I am taking it out in the late evenings now and riding it on a pretty much deserted road with a few curves. I do not want to give up on it because it is fun to ride, just very different than my two wheeler. I don't mean to sound ignorant, but I don't know what a belly pan is and if it is a good thing or a bad thing, what is it supose to do?

By Bob Kekeis on Wednesday, April 18, 2001 - 11:32 am:

Jimmy, the belly pan helps stabilize the bike in cross winds. I found it to work very well with two wheels and did not take it off when I went to three wheels. Another product from the same company that helps with the side winds and the wind blast off of trucks is the Tulsa windhsield.

Jimmy, I"m also a new trike owner and have a CSC with a Tulsa windshield and a belly pan. I'm impressed with it's handling in high winds. 30-40 knot winds are the normal here in the S.F. Delta.
Judy and I have logged 5000 miles in 5 weeks and I look for reasons to add more miles. The more I ride it the more I want to ride it. Dick...what wierd things?

By Dick Salveson on Thursday, April 19, 2001 - 09:28 pm:

To answer all ya'll about "weird" things. The trike felt light on it's wheels & danced like a two wheeler without a belly pan when around trucks, in other words it it felt like it did when it was only two wheeled and NO belly pan. I took the belly pan off and it rides rock solid no matter what. I have two other friends that had the same type of experience (one Motortrike & one CSC) and removed theirs.......I still have the tall Tulsa windshield and no way would I ever ride with a short stock windshield again.....The greatest thing since sliced bread for stability and corider comfort....

This is strange as I read about the Pushing of your trike into oncoming traffic. I just started riding for the first time in my life this December. I had no experience with motorcycles whatsoever. I am disabled from post polio on top of it all. I have fabricated special modifications on the grips as well. I have ridden like there is no tomorrow! I ride in strong cross winds, head winds, etc. I have been puzzled as I read about all of this. Im riding from Corpus Christi Texas to Greenville for Wing Ding and possibly on to New York for an interview with the NBC Today show.I have had no experiences such as the one described. If so, I would probably be a bit gun shy as well.

Jimmy, don't feel like the lone ranger out there. We recently got a trike following a bad wreck on our two wheeler. It is taking me along time to get used to the trike. It seems to pull to the right as if it will pull me off the rode. I had a a lot of apprehension about riding. We went to Carlsbad, NM and did a lot of riding and got more comfortable. At home, I ride neighborhoods where I have to make a lot of turns. I also go to large parking lots and do figure 8's and other stuff. I won't let it get the best of me.

By Bud Redmond on Sunday, April 22, 2001 - 03:22 pm:

Dave,
Put a CSC Power Trac fork modification on your Trike and the pull will disappear. :)

Jack,

When are you going to be on the Today show, and what is the topic?

By Jack Lokey on Monday, April 23, 2001 - 06:43 pm:

Lance,
Keyword, "possibly". If the Today show follows up,It will be a human interest story. I was born with Polio "in" the womb. The doctor gave my mother the live polio vaccine on a sugar cube while pregnant with me. Thus inducing me with polio. I was born without a left hipsocket and was never suppose to walk. I had eighteen corrective surgeries by the age of fifteen and was told I could die by the age of eighteen. Long story short... Now Im riding a Specialy modified Motortrike and incouraging others with disabilities. I designed my own hand shifter and I also have recently located a contact for an electric shifter for those who cannot shift with the hand shifter. Watch your Wing World magazine, As soon as my Trike is finished being painted Wing World will be recieving pics of the trike with all of my modifications. As well as a list of the many companies who are sponsoring my run to Greenville. Hope to see ya there!
P.S.
If anyone would be interested in getting involved in way of 'Sponsorship" feel free to email me. A few of the Sponsors thus far are as follows. GWRRA,Motortrike Corp. Shoei, Corbin, Side Effects,Venco Wings, Tulsa Enterprises, and many more Great people!

You guys that are having the trouble with the trike pushing, remember you have to steer the trike in to the curves, not lean it.I had the same problem until I learned that. That is why Jack is not having that problem he never drove a two wheeler. Same thing happened to a friend of ours she never drove a two wheeler, got on a trike and handles the trike with no problems. Hope this helps.
