GWRRA Message Board Archives: july2001: Introduction and question

Howdy, I'm BJ Ondo, my wife JO & I just bought a 83 GL1100A Aspencade and I see it "fit's" here in the Classic Wing SIG.

Well, I've had the frt. wheel bearings replaced, oil-filter done, full tune up with carb sync., fork seals and oil replaced, rear end oil replaced, etc.. I bought the bike from a dealership and it had "squeaking" noises coming from the rear end, they clean the rear brake caliper and it quit. After it's first real ride last Sunday, I think I hear muffled squeaking, any ideas on what to look for?

Sure is nice having a touring bike again, the last was a 80 GS1100E Suzuki sport standard we made up for Sport Touring. The Wing is much more comfortable but no where near as "quick" for passing as the ole GS1100E. Still being "two up" 99.9999% of the time the Wing is much better for the riding we do in Colorado, we live in Colorado Springs. Were 47, being riding since 1976.

Were members of WOTI & SCRC and looking at rejoining GWRRA but not happy with the local chapter, bad experiance in 1996 when things were much better financially and we bought a 1996 GL1500 Interstate. Will probably join the National and "search" for a good chapter.

Take care, Ride Safe but have FUN!

Hey BJ! Welcome back! Nice to see that good folks always have a way of finding their way back home :)

And like you said.... other Chapters are everywhere. We ride 40 miles South to one of our meetings, and 50 miles North to the other. Good folks at both!

If you was a little closer, I'd even invite ya to come visit us... but I doubt you'd be up to commuting to ATLANTA every month:O

Squeaking noises from the rear end are usually associated with dry pins onthe drive flange. This maintenance chore is often overlooked when the rear tire is changed.

To access the drive flange and the pins, rear wheel/tire removal is required. Anytime a rear tire is replaced, this maintenance should always be done.

1983 gl1100 cast mags were the "first" of what.... became a problem with the 84-5 gl1200 rear wheel hub/bearing problem areas.

Welcome Billy Joe and Jo! I checked out the picture of your ride and it is the same as ours except for the trunk and bag rails. We have also added wind wings and an oversized windshield along with a Diamond Custom seat. Bought ours with 17000 miles on her in 1993 and now have 63000 and still have plenty left to use up!! Hope you enjoy your's as much as we have enjoyed ours! Good luck and be careful out there.
