I have been riding a Gl1000 for some time and I have finaly learned how to tune it up, I have the timing down pretty good. I just bought a 1980 Gl1100, what did they do with the points on the 1100's?

Simple answer. Gone. The 1100's have an inductive
pick-up design that controls solid-state trigger
units that fire the coils.

The system works well. I replaced the OEM coils w/
the ACCEL motorcycle super coil kit. The main beef
about the 1100 system is that w/out modifcation, no
variation of the OEM ign. timing is not possible.
Conversely, it's maint. free. On an 1100 tune-up,
all that's req'd for ignition is a plug chg, & a
timing ck; wire resistance if they're old.

There are 2 variations on 1100 ignition, depending
mod. yr.

There are a number of aftermarket upgrades avail.
for 1000's. Many readers of this column like the
DYNA-S sys. Ck their web site.
